Overview
Yan Fang is one of the most compelling young pianists of his generation, praised by Musical America as “a rising soloist with expanding international profile” and recognized by People’s Daily for his masterful command of Russian musical language, his balance of “Slavic grandeur” and “poetic nuance,” and his “musical wisdom beyond his years.” His artistry has been admired by legendary pianist Dang Thai Son, Gold Medalist of the International Chopin Piano Competition, who praised his rare ability to make the piano “sing or speak,” his keen ear, and his remarkable balance of reason and emotion. Mariinsky Breakthrough
Yan became the first Chinese pianist in sixteen years, since Lang Lang’s appearance in 2009, to appear in the official season of The Mariinsky Orchestra, under the baton of Valery Gergiev, Artistic Director of the Mariinsky Theatre and the Bolshoi Theatre, Yan appeared with The Mariinsky Orchestra at the Mariinsky Theatre Opera House(M-2) in St. Petersburg. In the same year, Yan was invited to perform at the 20th Mariinsky International Piano Festival, where he presented a solo recital as part of his “Resonance Series” and closed the festival with the Mariinsky Orchestra under the baton of Gurgen Petrosyan, performing Rodion Shchedrin’s Piano Concerto No. 5.
Yan later made his recital debut at the Mariinsky Theatre Concert Hall, which was featured in VGTRK’s concert highlights of the Mariinsky Theatre. His sold-out performances in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Vladikavkaz, including added seating due to demand, marked a significant breakthrough for a young Chinese pianist.
2026 International Season
In the 2026 season, Yan is scheduled for an extensive international tour across China, Russia, South Korea, Hungary, Germany, Israel, Belarus, Thailand, and the United States. His confirmed 2026 orchestral collaborations include the Wuhan Philharmonic Orchestra, Jiangsu Symphony Orchestra, Sichuan Philharmonic Orchestra, Hohhot Philharmonic Orchestra, Lanzhou Symphony Orchestra, Szolnok Symphony Orchestra, with performances at the Novák Cultural Center in Szolnok and Liszt Hall in Budapest, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, where he will open the orchestra’s 2026–27 season under the baton of Carl St. Clair, the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and Daegu Symphony Orchestra with Baek Jin-Hyoun , National Symphony Orchestra of Belarus with Alexander Anisimov, Mariinsky Orchestra, Vladikavkaz Branch Philharmonic, and many others.
China Shanghai International Arts Festival
Yan was also featured at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival, one of the most influential arts festivals in the Asia-Pacific region. The festival has presented many of the world’s leading orchestras, conductors, and artists, including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Kirill Petrenko and Yuja Wang, the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra with Lahav Shani, the Munich Philharmonic with Tugan Sokhiev, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Daniel Harding and many others. His appearance at the festival further reflected his expanding international profile and his place among a new generation of artists active on major global cultural platforms.

Festival Highlights
During the 2024–2025 season, Yan represented Asian pianists at the Daegu International Piano Festival, appearing with one of Korea’s leading orchestras, the Daegu Symphony Orchestra. The festival brought him alongside distinguished pianists including Wael Farouk, Antonio Pompa-Baldi, and Marcos Madrigal, Anna Bulkina.
He was also invited as the youngest artist to close Bulgaria’s Winter Music Evenings Festival, where he appeared with the Pazardzhik Symphony Orchestra under Yuri Medianik and was praised by critics as one of the most promising young pianists.
Chinese Works and Cultural Dialogue
In 2025, Yan co-curated and performed a full Chinese works program with the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring the Yellow River Piano Concerto, Ode to the Red Flag, and Li Huanzhi’s Symphony No. 1, Wind from the Sea. The project created a strong cultural impact and reflected Yan’s belief that music can transcend borders and serve as a bridge between civilizations. Following the success of this program, Yan invited the Tyumen Philharmonic Orchestra to China for a tour under the baton of its Artistic Director and Chief Conductor Yuri Medianik, including an appearance at the China Shanghai International Arts Festival.
National Cultural Projects
Beyond the concert stage, Yan is deeply engaged in cultural advocacy, education, heritage initiatives, and public service. He has appeared in nationally broadcast cultural events, including China’s Mid-Autumn Festival, where he performed Spring River in the Flower Moonlit Night with renowned Chinese traditional instrumentalist Fang Jinlong.
In 2025, Yan was invited as soloist for multiple concerts commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, successfully presenting several performances of the Yellow River Piano Concerto, a work closely connected to his artistic lineage through his teacher and mentor Chengzong Yin, one of the concerto’s composers. Invited by the Chinese government, Yan has performed for senior state leaders and has appeared as soloist in concerts commemorating major national anniversaries. He also commissioned and premiered a solo-piano arrangement of My Motherland and I and was the sole pianist selected from Xiamen’s music community to perform the concerto I Love Gulangyu with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra.
Xiamen International Piano Center
Yan was appointed Honorary Artist and Artist-in-Residence of the International Piano Center at Xiamen Institute of Technology, where he works alongside internationally recognized musicians and educators to promote music performance, education, and international cooperation. His artistic network through this appointment includes figures such as Zhou Mingsun of the Central Conservatory of Music, Choi Chung-lik of the Hong Kong Piano Music Association, Kenneth Hamilton of Cardiff University, Markus Groh of Berlin University of the Arts, Roman Zaslavsky of the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, Italian artist Red Canzian, and pianist Abisal Gergiev.
Gulangyu and UNESCO Heritage
Yan has long been committed to the cultural heritage of Gulangyu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its historic musical culture. During Gulangyu Island’s UNESCO World Heritage campaign, he curated the themed concert Supporting Gulangyu’s World Heritage Bid at the Gulangyu Concert Hall, demonstrating his belief that musical performance can contribute to cultural preservation and public awareness. He later gave a UNESCO Gulangsu – The World Heritage Site recital at Gulangyu Concert Hall, continuing his artistic connection with the island’s musical legacy.

Yan is a G. Henle Verlag Partner Pianist. He was chosen by G. Henle Verlag and Sir Murray Perahia as one of only ten pianists worldwide, and the sole Chinese artist, to attend the Beethoven Masterclass and give a performance in Munich
Teaching and Academic Activity
As an educator and cultural advocate, Yan has taught masterclasses at institutions including the Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Harbin Conservatory of Music, and Xiamen International Piano Center. His students have gone on to study at major institutions around the world.
He was invited by the China National Arts Fund and premiered the winning work Along the Songhua River. He was also the youngest pianist invited to the 2nd and 3rd Xiamen University International Music Festivals, where he gave solo recitals and performed concertos with the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra. He has given immersive lecture-performances at major cultural institutions including the Beijing City Library, where his two lecture-concerts sold out in under two seconds. In the coming season, he is scheduled to give concerts and lecture-performances at leading academic institutions, including Peking University and Xiamen University, continuing his mission to make classical music more accessible, engaging, and connected to contemporary audiences.
Community Impact
Yan’s community work is central to his artistic identity. In 2020, he co-founded the Fang Yan Charity Concerts with the Dangdangzhe Action Foundation, drawing support from twenty-one companies across eleven industries and receiving coverage from eighteen major media outlets. The series raised more than RMB 450,000, funding nearly 7,000 community children in rural China, with the number continuing to grow. Classic FM Bulgaria praised his career by stating, “His career is connected with many noble initiatives.”
A passionate advocate for making classical music accessible to broader audiences, Yan also delivered the TEDx talk “18 Minutes: Classical is also close to you,” presenting his belief that classical music can speak directly to modern life and human experience.
Brand and Cross-Disciplinary Collaborations
Yan has also been active in cross-disciplinary and brand collaborations. He has appeared at the Golden Rooster & Hundred Flowers Film Festival, in Xiamen’s city-promotion film, and in creative collaborations with brands and institutions including NIO, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, Trader Joe’s, China Merchants Shekou, G. Henle Verlag, and the AI-driven music education brand XiaoYeZi. He was the exclusive performer at the Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts ceremony celebrating Hilton’s 300-hotel milestone and the grand opening of its newest property.

Awards and Honors
Yan is the Grand Prize Winner of the 2025 Busan International Music Competition. His other honors include China Public Welfare Figure of the Year(Dandangzhe Foundation), First Prize in the New England Conservatory Honors Competition, the Silver Medal at the Steinway International Concerto Competition, First Prize and Special Distinction at the Cheer Tainan International Music Competition, the Silver Medal at the Gulangyu National Youth Piano Competition, and Third Prize at the KAWAI Cup National Piano Competition. He has also participated in major international competitions including the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition and the Leeds International Piano Competition.
Education
Yan holds an Artist Diploma from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Yefim Bronfman and became the first Piano Artist Diploma recipient in ten years. He earned his Master of Music degree from The Juilliard School, studying with Jerome Lowenthal, former Chair of the Piano Department at Juilliard, and Hung-Kuan Chen, former Chair of the Piano Department at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and the first Chinese piano professor in Juilliard’s history. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from New England Conservatory, where he studied with Alexander Korsantia, winner of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition and the Sydney International Piano Competition, and completed an Academy Diploma at The Colburn School Music Academy under Dr. Myong-joo Lee.
